Who Am I?

with 5 comments

few years before his death in 1999, the great Latin American advocate for the poor, Brazil’s Archbishop Dom Helder Camara, was speaking at a crowded church in Berkeley, California. He was asked, “After facing death squads, would-be assassins, corporations oppressing the poor, violent government opposition, and even hostile forces within your own church, who is your most difficult opponent?”

Without saying a word, Dom Helder pointed his hand into the air, then slowly arched it around, until it turned on himself, his index finger pointing to his heart. “I am my own worst enemy,” he said, “my most difficult adversary. Here I have the greatest struggle for peace.” …
If we want to make peace with others, we first need to be at peace with ourselves. But this can sometimes be as difficult as making peace in the bloodiest of the world’s war zones.

What is it that defines us? How do we know who we are? What drives me, you, or anyone? Do we find our identity in our parents? Our friends? God? I have found it to be true that without God life is void of purpose, and without purpose life is meaningless. Life itself becomes a dreadful collage of pain, suffering, anxiety, stress, struggle, hopelessness, and loneliness mixed with the occasional alternative to each. We work to meet ends that can never be met. I have been thinking a lot about the question that seems most important as of late. Who am I? I believe that in this time of my life this needs to be answered. It will take me some serious self-examination, and lots of prayer. Latley I have had many details of my existence pointed out to me by my family, friends, and the Holy Spirit. I’m finding very much that the ones I find most enraging are the ones I am now finding to be true.

Officer Spurlock?

To get something out of the way first for all of you who keep asking, and wondering, etc etc. Yes, I have a full time job, I was hired this past Friday at Wal-Mart in Highland. I’m just doing warehouse stuff, nothing super exciting but it’s a job for now.

So I was talking with my parents the other night about careers, salaries, marriage, family, etc. How much is needed to have a house and support others as a man these days. It got me thinking more about where I’m needing to go from here and such. I jumped on Google for a bit before I went to bed and found that there are currently openings at SIUE for police officers. HOOZAH! This is precisely the field I’m trying to get into. The best part? They don’t require you to have a college degree for entry level. You simply have to: Read the rest of this entry »

Even Now II

with 2 comments

Good morning, you. :) I myself have been up since 6AM on this beautiful misty day. Ironed my clothes, did my hair, ate some breakfast, and spent some pricless time with my Jesus.

Why do these things? I want to start a new life style, or rather take control of the life that’s been given to me. Jesus tell us that to win this life, we’ve got to lose it. This means giving it to him, and that’s what I’m doing. Gladly and willingly submitting my life to the Lord.

Oh yeah.. and I’ve got a job interview I need to show up for at 7:30am.. :)

catch ya later!

they became fools, and exchanged the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man… there fore God gave them over in the lusts of their heart to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served creature rather than Creator, whois blessed forever. Amen. ~Romans 22-24
